A typical 1930s Brussels house, chosen by a young family with two children, it had charm but little connection to its garden. The kitchen sat in a separate annex, and a staircase down to the cellar cut across the way from the entrance to the garden.
The house was enlarged with a bright, contemporary extension that opens fully onto the garden, bringing cooking, dining and living together in one generous, light-filled space. The layout was reorganised so the house now flows naturally from front to back. Throughout the rest of the house, the most interesting original details were kept and paired with a modern touch, creating a home where old and new sit comfortably together, made for everyday family life. This project was a collaboration with AC+Architecture.
